HISTORY

A thousand-year-old city in three acts

11TH CENTURY

Bishopric and Middle Ages

The first written mentions of Eger date back to the 11th century, when King Stephen I founded the Eger bishopric, helping spread Christianity in the region. Through the Middle Ages, Eger became an important religious centre, and many ecclesiastical buildings — including the impressive Eger Basilica that still stands today — were built. The city's economic and cultural development also began here, lying at the crossroads of major trade routes that supported the flourishing of commerce and crafts.

16TH CENTURY

The Siege of the Castle

In the 16th century, Eger stood in the path of the advancing Ottoman Empire, and the 1552 siege became one of the most memorable events in Hungarian history. That year, fewer than 2,000 Hungarian defenders — including women and clergy — successfully held the castle against more than 40,000 Ottoman soldiers. The event made Eger a symbol of courage and resistance for the whole country. The city continued to play an important role in the wars against the Ottomans, and was eventually retaken at the end of the 17th century.

18TH CENTURY

Baroque rebirth and wine country

In the 18th century, Eger flourished again as the city and its surroundings were rebuilt. Many baroque buildings were erected during this period — still important tourist attractions today. The city is also famous for its wines, especially "Egri Bikavér" (Bull's Blood of Eger), tied to the legend of the successful resistance against the Ottomans. Eger remains an important cultural and tourist centre, where visitors can discover Hungary's rich historical and cultural heritage.
